2007 AWARD ANNOUNCEMENT

The Los Angeles Times has been named the winner of the 2007 National Council on Public Polls “Warren Mitofsky Excellence in Media Coverage of Polls” Award.

The NCPP Warren Mitofsky Excellence in Media Coverage of Polls award is given annually by the National Council on Public Polls (NCPP) to a professional journalist who best exemplifies the standards of accuracy and insight in the reporting of polls in the media. The submission may be from television, print, radio, or Internet and must be published or broadcast in the United States. It may be based on an individual news story or a series. The work should reflect the mission of NCPP to advance public understanding of poll results and their meaning.

Excellence in Media Coverage of Polls

NCPP is an association of public polling and media organizations established in 1969. Its mission is to set the highest professional standards for public opinion pollsters, and to advance the understanding among politicians, the media, and general public of how polls are conducted and how to interpret poll results. Since its inception, NCPP has sponsored seminars, workshops and press conferences in Washington and New York City, and publications to promote better understanding and reporting of public opinion polls.

Process of Selection for the 2007 Award:
Nominees must be made by March 30, 2007 and the announcement of the award will be made by June 1, 2007. The period under consideration covers January 1, 2006 through December 31, 2006. The selection committee consists of 5 individuals from the membership of NCPP selected by the Board of Trustees. Through its Chair, the selection committee shall recommend its choice to the Board of NCPP. The selection committee shall receive nominations from interested individuals, but it’s not limited in its consideration to those nominees. Nominations must be accompanied by a submission of five copies of the work including articles, cassette/VHS tapes with transcripts, or screen prints of any Internet submission of the work that is under consideration. The award winner will be notified in writing and will be honored at an NCPP event soon thereafter. Submissions should be sent to the president of NCPP. No trustee or member representative to NCPP is eligible.

Amount of Award: $2,000
